Iran claimed 2-0 victory over Wales

The Iranian players, who sang the national song prior to the game at the Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium, threw their crowds of fans into a frenzy as they celebrated their first World Cup victory over a European side. Due to a late collision with Mehdi Taremi, Wales goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey became the first player at the Qatar tournament to get a red card.

Iran finally scored in the 98th minute on replacement Rouzbeh Cheshmi's powerful effort after hitting the woodwork twice earlier. Three minutes later, Ramin Rezaeian snuck in a second on the counterattack. Instead of being eliminated if they lost, Iran moved up to second place in Group B behind England, who defeated them 6-2 in their first match. Wales finished last in their group, and to have any hope of moving on to the round of 16 in their first World Cup since 1958, they will need to face English neighbours in their final game next week.
