Victor Osimhen and Stephan El Shaarawy's goals were cancelled out by each other before Giovanni Simeone scored a late goal to win the game for the home team. After 12 minutes, Kim Min-Jae nearly gave Napoli the lead when he misread goalkeeper Alex Meret's position and headed the ball just to the right of the empty net. Osimhen, the top scorer in Serie A, gave Napoli the lead after 17 minutes after chesting down a cross inside the box and firing a volley past Rui Patrcio for his 14th goal of the year. The home team quickly recovered, though.
As the game started to open up in the second half, Roma started to come alive, forcing Alex Meret to make a diving save from Bryan Cristante's header from a corner and then Patricio stopping Napoli from a counter. In the 75th minute, substitute Stephan El Shaarawy equalized the score for his team by outpacing his defender and converting a cross.
