Lewandowski, who helped Poland advance to the quarterfinals of the Qatar World Cup before being knocked out by the cup champion France, joined Barcelona from Bayern Munich at the beginning of the season and currently tops the La Liga scoring chart with 13 goals.
Only one winner is selected by means of an online vote by fans every year, and only active players older than 28 are eligible. Mohamed Salah received the honour last season, and Lionel Messi, who led Argentina to World Cup glory on Sunday, has yet to win it. The list also includes Ronaldo, Francesco Totti, Ryan Giggs, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Didier Drogba, Andres Iniesta, Samuel Eto'o, Gianluigi Buffon, Iker Casillas, Edinson Cavani, and Luka Modric.
