Roma's return to Serie A play on Wednesday at the Stadio Olimpico resulted in a narrow 1-0 victory over Bologna thanks to an early Lorenzo Pellegrini penalty. There were few opportunities for either team during this cagey contest, but the hosts' strong defensive play allowed them to come away with the victory.
When Jhon Lucumi was given a yellow card for pulling down Paulo Dybala in the box, the penalty was given within the first five minutes of play. After the Bologna defender made a clumsy challenge, referee Alberto Santoro had a simple decision to make. Then, Pellegrini converted expertly from the penalty spot, placing the ball into the right corner and fooling Lukasz Skorupski in the goal. After then, the game produced relatively few opportunities, but around the halfway point, Riccardo Orsolini attempted an overly ambitious overhead kick in response to a good cross from the left side by Charalampos Lykogiannis.
