The decision to bench Cristiano Ronaldo against South Korea in the Selecao's last group stage match was not personal, according to Portugal manager Fernando Santos. It was announced that the ex-Manchester United player would start from the bench against the Swiss in the World Cup last 16 because of his petulant reaction to being substituted against South Korea.
Santos explained earlier this week that he wasn't a fan of Ronaldo's behavior during that loss, and he was asked about his preference to replace the 37-year-old with the inexperienced Goncalo Ramos after advancing to the quarter-finals. It looked as if Santos was pushed for an answer to his choice as he responded, "I already answered this question. I am not the one who affects Fernando Santos or the team. Coaches make decisions. There is no problem between Fernando Santos and the captain of the national team. Things don't affect us."
