Schmidt is the first German coach to win the Portuguese championship

In his first season in the Portuguese championship, the former coach of PSV Eindhoven, born 57 years ago in Kierspe, managed to win the competition, putting an end to a sequence of 16 consecutive victories by Portuguese coaches.

Schmidt, who succeeds Jupp Heynckes at Luz (1999/2001) at Luz (1999/2001), was Benfica's first bet on a foreign coach since the Spaniard Quique Flores, in 2008/09, with the 'incarnates' not winning with an 'outsider' ' since Italy's Giovanni Trapattoni won four years earlier.

In the list of champions, the German, also a former coach of Salzburg and Bayer Leverkusen, is the 55th coach to win the championship and the 29th foreigner.

The list of champions also boasts two titles with a Romanian brand and many others with an Italian brand, while Uruguay, Yugoslavia and the Netherlands have a scepter, now being joined by Germany, by Roger Schmidt.
