The first 25 minutes of the game were unremarkable, except for Gianluca Mancini receiving a yellow card early on. Both teams appeared satisfied to build up to such a high-pressure encounter gradually. Misfortune, however, is never far away in a game of this significance, especially when it involves Roma, and sure enough, the Giallorossi were struck by disaster a short while later.
Ibanez took a moment or two longer than necessary to move the ball out of the back, which allowed Pedro, a former Roma player, to get near to Ibanez and gain enough control of the ball to push it away and into Felipe Anderson's path, who scored the goal with ease. The remainder of the half saw Roma control the ball, but they could not get past a stubborn Lazio defence and went into the interval still looking for a goal.
