Spain exit from the World Cup while Morocco created history

Spain’s 3-0 loss on penalties by Morocco was a crucial turning point for the World Cup last-16 clash on Tuesday after the teams tied at 0-0. The midfielder’s spot-kick was prevented by goalkeeper Yassine Bounou as the 2010 World Cup victors could not convert any of their penalties. Now, Morocco has become the first-ever Arab country and only the fourth African country to progress to the World Cup quarterfinals.

Achraf Hakimi converted the deciding penalty in the shootout. Abdelhamid Sabiri and Hakim Ziyech, who came back to the national team after an altercation with the previous coach, also fired goals for Morocco. Pablo Sarabia, Carlos Soler and Sergio Busquets failed to convert their penalties for Spain, with Sarabia touching the post and Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou preventing the other two. The teams tied at 0-0 in regulation and extra time.
