Switzerland beats Serbia

Xherdan Shaqiri of Switzerland sprinted away as soon as the ball went into the goal. After scoring the first goal in Switzerland's 3-2 victory over Serbia on Friday, which sent his team to the round of 16 for the third consecutive World Cup, it was obvious where he was going. A FIFA statement requesting fans to "avoid discriminatory shouting and gestures" and a late brawl between players from both teams disrupted Serbia and Switzerland's World Cup group-stage match.

After Aleksandar Mitrovic and Dusan Vlahovic had answered Xherdan Shaquiri's opening goal in the 20th minute, a rapid double from Breel Embolo and Remu Freuler on either side of the half significantly tipped the game in Switzerland's favour. Midway through the second half, tensions rose when a Mitrovic penalty appeal was denied, causing Serbian personnel to flood out of the dugout. The game became tense, and Embolo had to be escorted away from his rivals.
