Australia defeated Tunisia 1-0 at the Al Janoub Stadium on Saturday to mark their first World Cup win in 12 years as they provisionally climbed up to second in Group D behind reigning victors France. Striker Mitchell Duke shot midway through the first half with a header past keeper Aymen Dahmen to put Australia ahead with a lead, while Tunisia’s best opportunity was with the skipper Youssef Msakni who shot just wide.
Tunisia boarded the squad’s top scorer Wahbi Khazri in the second half as they raised the heat in search of an equaliser, but the Australian defence stood strong and could not be impaled with goalkeeper and skipper Mat Ryan being a calming presence at the back. The victory broke Australia’s seven-match winless course at World Cups since they last picked up three points in a win over Serbia in 2010.
