Union Berlin crashed to a surprise 2-1 defeat at Bochum on Wednesday and now find themselves in serious danger of the Munich pack. Schalke's hard-luck 2-1 loss to Hertha Berlin on Sunday, however, lifted Bochum off the bottom of the rankings.
Frederik Ronnow gave Bochum a deserved lead in the 43rd minute with a corner kick after Union goalkeeper Frederik Nicmonow had palmed Osei-Tutu's dangerous shot away. After the ball had been in the air for a few seconds, Holtmann stepped up and slammed it into the net for a classy and fast attack. Union responded, however, and Riemann saved a penalty from Pantovic in the 78th minute to end their misery.
Union still stands atop after their second-season defeat but with only one point lead over Bayern Munich, with Freiburg at their toes.
