Union Berlin had the chance to take a step towards European football but missed out after the relegated Greuther Furth side held Berlin with a 1-1 draw at home. Their four-match winning streak ended with a poor effort on Friday, and it did not help matters that it was Union’s 100th league match in Bundesliga. Visitors opened with Branimir Hrgota’s curler at the half an hour point as the bottom side who would be exiting the top-flight tournament did not want to leave on a sour note.
But Union’s substitute scored a 72nd-minute equaliser as they plan to climb up from a sixth-place finish and have at least assured at least a seventh-place finish, and a Europa Conference League spot, with two games remaining in Bundesliga.
