Var of controversy in var...ious Leagues

Although the introduction of the VAR was aimed to assist the referees' decisions, it has already sparked controversy across several European leagues. Here some examples.

LaLiga: Real Madrid, Valladolid, Levante, Getafe...Atletico Madrid were the first team to publicly request that the VAR's form of action be explained after no penalty was given in the derby against Real Madrid.

Ligue One: Bordeaux called VAR 'a scam'. A penalty awarded in favour of Nice and against Bordeaux.

Bundesliga: Controversy in the Augsburg-RB Leipzig game. The referee gave a penalty and, four minutes later, decided to reverse his decision. Last August, the president of Bayern Munich, Uli Hoeness, also criticised the VAR.

Serie A: The technology has been used since 2017/18. According to a recent study, this year the VAR has already been used on 43 occasions, some of them doubtful.

In Mexico, Toluca coach Hernan Cristante heavily criticised the use of technology.
