Villarreal has had an excellent second half of the season under Marcelino Garcia Toral's direction. They intend to carry this momentum into the 2024-25 campaign in an attempt to get back into the running for European spots. They've already made progress in this area, and signings will be helpful in this regard. Due to uncertainties surrounding the futures of Frances Coquelin and Etienne Capoue, Villarreal had to commit to a new center midfield player for the upcoming campaign. They have now succeeded in doing so, an agreement has been reached to recruit Pape Gueye of Marseille for free.
Gueye's contract with Marseille expires in the summer, and although other European teams were interested in signing him, Villarreal currently seems to have prevailed in the competition. Due to Marcelino Garcia Toral’s brief tenure as Marseille's manager at the beginning of the season, Villarreal's head coach knows Gueye well enough. He has now set up a reunion of the two for next season at least.
