The latest player to become a victim of racial abuse is gunners striker Eddie Nketiah who was racially abused on social media, before his side’s Europa League tie against Benfica. The account of the user who sent racist abuse to the Arsenal star has been permanently suspended.
Among the other footballers who were racially abused on social media include Manchester United’s Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford, Lauren James, and Reece James. Venkatesham expressed that online racism is becoming a source of concern and is being normalized.
He pleads that it will take a different direction if progress is not made in this direction. He said that racial abuse of many of the black footballers on social channels is the biggest problem in the game and can tarnish an individual’s self-image as everyone is a human being in the end.
