Things go from bad to worse for Wigan. After having confirmed relegation from the Championship, the club has just been sanctioned by the English Football League.
Last week, the English team had already dropped four points (for next year) after failing to pay their players on time for the fifth time this season. But on Friday, the club was hit with yet another four-point deduction.
Thus, the EFL took the decision because the Latics have not managed, since May 24, the necessary funds to pay their wage bill.
"Following the failure to ensure that an amount equal to 125% of the club's expected monthly payroll was deposited into a designated club account, Wigan Athletic FC have been deducted a further four points and will now commence the 2023/24 season with minus eight points (-8)."
