On day four in Wellington, Nathan Lyon took six wickets in the morning session as New Zealand collapsed to 196 all out, spinning the visitors to victory. The off-spinner Lyon claimed four of New Zealand's last seven wickets for 70 runs before lunch. Lyon ended with statistics of 6/65 after 27 overs and 10-108 for the match. The 36-year-old took advantage of the Basin Reserve's spin-friendly conditions as well as some poor batting from New Zealand, who started the day at 111/3 and needed an implausible 258 extra runs to win.
After Australia was sent to bat, Cameron Green's career-high unbeaten 174 on the first day helped them overcome 89/4 to reach 383 and establish a commanding 204-run advantage in the first innings. Green was declared the man of the match.
