James Hopes named new Sixers boss

James Hopes has been appointed head coach of the Sydney Sixers on a two‑year contract, giving the former Australian allrounder his first opportunity to lead a professional side. The 47‑year‑old, currently serving as bowling coach for Punjab Kings in the IPL, has spent recent years building his reputation through specialist roles across franchise cricket. He now takes over one of the Big Bash League’s most successful teams, a club with three titles and multiple runner‑up finishes, including last season’s campaign that ended with Greg Shipperd’s exit.

Hopes said he was honoured to join a franchise known for its identity, consistency and strong connection with supporters, adding that he is eager to work with a talented squad and help shape the next chapter of the Sixers’ success.

A seasoned international, Hopes played 84 ODIs and 12 T20Is for Australia, with his final appearance coming in 2010.
