Nahida Akter named Bangladesh’s new T20I captain

Nahida Akter has been appointed Bangladesh’s new women’s T20I captain, the Bangladesh Cricket Board confirmed on Sunday. She replaces Nigar Sultana, who stepped down after the Asian Games to concentrate on her performances, with Sobhana Mostary named deputy.

BCB women’s wing chairman Rafiqul Islam told press that the decision followed discussions with selectors and other officials, adding that Nahida was ready to assume greater responsibility.

The left-arm spinner had served as Sultana’s vice-captain since 2022, making her a natural successor after four years in the leadership group.

Sultana will retain the ODI captaincy, continuing in the role she held during Bangladesh’s recent three-match series in Australia. Her decision to relinquish the T20I leadership reportedly surprised the board, amid reports of dissatisfaction over her treatment in recent months.

Bangladesh’s next assignment is the ICC Women’s Emerging Nations Trophy in Thailand, where they begin against Pakistan on November 12.
