AFCON 2025: Ivory Coast begin title defence with narrow victory

Ivory Coast labored against Mozambique’s stubborn defense, eventually securing a 1-0 victory thanks to Amad Diallo’s early second-half goal. Two years after their miraculous 2024 home triumph under Emerse Fae, the Elephants faced pressure in a difficult Group F alongside Gabon and Cameroon. Defeating the Mambas was crucial.

Despite dominating possession, their first-half performance remained unconvincing, as Zaha and Doué missed chances while Konan hit the post. Fae, missing injured Haller and omitted Pepe, desperately needed a breakthrough. It arrived in the 49th minute when Kessie headed Doué’s cross to Diallo, who finished clinically. Although dominant, Ivory Coast failed to kill the game, with Sangaré and Kessie wasting a golden opportunity.
