Red-hot Alvaro Morata scored again as Atletico Madrid defeated Alaves 2-1 at home for a record-tying 14th consecutive Spanish league victory. Morata's goal was his eighth in his past seven games for Atletico Madrid, who matched their winning streak from a decade ago. While still playing at the Vicente Calderon Stadium, Diego Simeone's club had won 14 consecutive games at home between May 2012 and February 2013.
In the 26th minute, Rodrigo Riquelme put Atletico ahead, and Morata extended his scoring run in the first half stoppage. Atletico was still missing a few injured players from their squad, including the big names, Samuel Lino, Thomas Lemar, Memphis Depay and Reinildo. Atletico Madrid moved up to third position in La Liga with 25 points, three behind Girona and Real Madrid. On Saturday, Madrid rallied from behind to upset Barcelona 2-1 in the first league "clasico" of the season, while Girona overcame Celta Vigo 1-0 on Friday.
