Barcelona returned to the top of the La Liga standings

After a fierce 1-0 victory over Rayo Vallecano, Barcelona returned to the top of the La Liga standings thanks to a penalty kick from Robert Lewandowski in the first half. Following weekend draws with Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid, two other championship contenders, Hansi Flick's team capitalised to maintain their hopes of winning the league for the 28th time. Barcelona got off to a solid start in the match, with Raphinha's excellent effort on the outside of the box preventing Lewandowski from guiding an early header on goal.

After a bad header back to his custodian, Andrei Ratiu then almost gave the home team the lead, but Raphinha missed the mark with his attempt.  However, Barcelona's superiority finally won out in the 28th minute when the referee pointed to the spot after Pathe Ciss' needless tackle on Inigo Martinez from a corner.
