Bologna had hoped to continue their winning streak after beating Roma and Spezia Calcio in their previous two games, whereas Fiorentina had just defeated Sampdoria 3-1. These two teams were tied on 24 points and had a chance to move up to the fifth place. Bologna got off to a good start with a goal from Youssef Maleh after 33 minutes. Their joy was short-lived, however, as Musa Barrow equalized for them shortly before halftime, bringing the first half to a 1-1 draw.
In the second half, Fiorentina produced a recovery, with Cristiano Biraghi scoring at 51 minutes and Dusan Vlahovic scoring at 67 minutes to make it 3-1. Bologna recovered with an attempt from Aaron Hickey on 83 minutes to extend their advantage, but the game finished in a 3-2 win for the visitors.
