Wout Weghorst and Bartosz Bialek both scored for Wolfsburg beating a struggling Mainz to take 5th place on the table and level on point with fourth-placed Dortmund after they lost 2-1 to Leverkusen. The breakthrough for Wolfsburg came in the second half with Bialek scoring in the 69th minute and Weghorst putting them ahead later in the 79th minute.
Mainz was entering the match on an eight-game winless streak and Wolfsburg were reeling from a loss to Mönchengladbach, Maximilian Arnold joined them for the night after serving a suspension. Another reason to celebrate for Wolfsburg was Weghorst set a club record with his 12th goal in 17 appearances in the 2020/21 campaign which last season was reached in 28 matches. While for Bialek it was his second goal of the season off the bench.
