The sides had previously played on Tuesday in the Carabao Cup, with Erik ten Hag's club easily winning 3-0. This was their second encounter in five days. However, Palace rested a lot of first-team players for that contest, so they were a very different squad on Saturday when they put up the ideal away performance. Rasmus Hojlund's attempt was well blocked by Tyrick Mitchell before Andersen expertly drove a first-time effort into the top corner to give Palace the lead.
The pressure from Manchester United increased after that, but they were unable to breach the Palace line. When they did, they discovered Sam Johnstone, the custodian, in excellent shape. In the second half, Johnstone made two critical stops to maintain Palace's advantage, first tipping Bruno Fernandes' dipping shot over the bar and then blocking Hojlund's powerful header. The Palace goal continued to have a lucky life, but Manchester United was unable to get through.
