Football can be a cruel game and that was the case for us when we were beaten in the semi-finals of the Presidents Cup by Roaring Lions, 5-3 on penalties after a dramatic 110 minutes of football saw the game finish 0-0.
Facing off against last season's quadruple winners, we knew we were going to be in for a very difficult game, and it so it proved to be, but it must be said our amazing performance throughout the game that was full of energy, skill, determination, and tactical discipline made it a very difficult game for our opponents as well! Our coach, Chavoi Gumbs set us up perfectly to limit Lions in front of goal, and when on the odd occasion they did get in behind us, our young goalkeeper, Shemor Browne was there to save the day!
However, please don’t think that this was a backs against the wall type of display, because it wasn’t! Our pace and power in the attacking third also caused Lions plenty of problems and they had their goalkeeper to thank several times for preventing us from scoring, especially a header in the second half from Leon Whyle that somehow the custodian pushed past the post!
This game was nail biting from start to finish. It saw us being on top for long periods and then having to defend stoutly against attacks on our goal from Lions in what was a great advert for Anguillian and Caribbean football as a whole!
Every Uprising player put in an amazing shift and each one of them can be immensely proud of their performance, to go out on penalties was a bitter pill to swallow, but we can take a multitude of positives from this game as we move closer to the beginning of the league season. One thing is for sure; we made a statement in this game; we know that every team on the island will have taken note and will not be relishing coming up against us one bit! The future looks very bright indeed!
