On Sunday, Lautaro Martinez gave Inter Milan a 1-0 derby victory over the fading champions AC Milan, but his club still trails Serie A leaders Napoli by 13 points after the latter easily defeated Spezia 3-0. At the San Siro, Argentine striker Martinez scored his 12th league goal of the year in the 34th minute to keep Inter in second position and further embarrass their nearby opponents.
A third straight league loss drops Milan to sixth place and sends them on a downward trajectory that threatens to entirely derail a season that, up until a little over a month ago, appeared to be progressing more or less as expected. Since the World Cup, Stefano Pioli's team has only won five of their six league games, lost to Inter in the Super Cup, and been eliminated from the Italian Cup. In fewer than ten days, Milan must play Tottenham Hotspur in their first Champions League last-16 match since 2014.
