Iraq requests World Cup play-off delay

Iraq manager Graham Arnold has formally asked FIFA to postpone the national team’s upcoming World Cup play‑off, fearing that the closure of Iraqi airspace could prevent players and staff from reaching Mexico in time. Iraq are scheduled to face the winner of Suriname–Bolivia tie on 31 March in Monterrey, a match that could send the Lions of Mesopotamia to their first World Cup in 40 years. 

Arnold warned that relying solely on players based abroad would weaken the squad, stressing the need for FIFA to propose an alternative plan. He argued that a delay would allow proper preparation and clarity amid escalating tensions between Iran and the United States. 

Airspace across much of the Middle East has been shut since 28 February following U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran and Tehran’s retaliatory actions. Arnold added that FIFA may also need time to assess Iran’s status, noting that a withdrawal could alter qualification paths for Iraq and the UAE.
