After a brief reign of Manchester United and Leicester City, Manchester City gets its turn to stay at the top of the league for the first time in the series after an injury-ridden Liverpool lost their dominating stance. The 2-0 win over Dean Smith’s Aston Villa handed them the chance to top the league despite Manchester United’s 2-1 win over Fulham.
Aston Villa had managed to hold back City for 79 minutes on the rain-soaked night denying them a chance to get ahead of United with an enthralling encounter but City slipped through the cracks late in the match and found their breakthrough. Bernardo Silva’s strike put his side ahead with his first goal of the season a fuming Smith was later handed a red card for protesting and the night went from worse to worst for Villa when City was awarded a penalty when Ilkay Gundogan converted in the 90th minute.
