Meret wants Napoli reassurance

Alex Meret reportedly rejected a new contract from Napoli, as he wants to be sure he’ll be first choice ahead of David Ospina next season.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the shot-stopper was made the proposal because his current deal is due to expire in June 2023.

However, Meret refused to sign until he had some sort of reassurance that he’ll not become just an understudy to Colombia international Ospina.

Today is his 23rd birthday and he needs regular playing time, but since Gennaro Gattuso took over in December, he has fallen down the pecking order.

Meret was benched for the Champions League clash with Barcelona, the Coppa Italia semi-final with Inter and each of the last four Serie A games.
