Rangers were able to defeat Servette thanks to a better second half performance in Switzerland after James Tavernier's equaliser propelled them into the Champions League playoffs. Five minutes after the half, Tavernier's header resulted in a 1-1 tie, giving Michael Beale's team a 3-2 victory overall.
In the first half, Rangers failed to put the home custodian to the test and may have trailed by more at the break, but they improved after the break and had opportunities to take the second leg. Beale modified Rangers' regular 4-3-3 formation to a midfield diamond led by Todd Cantwell and reinserted Connor Goldson and Ryan Jack into the lineup after resting the duo for Saturday's league victory against Livingston. Abdallah Sima and Danilo took the lead off. Rangers attacked early after Beale said they had come to Geneva to win the game, but José Cifuentes missed their first opportunity to score with his left foot.
