Real Madrid 2-1 victory against fierce rivals Atletico

With a 2-1 victory against fierce rivals Atletico in the first leg of their Champions League last 16 match, Real Madrid maintained its control of the Madrid derby on Europe's largest stage thanks to an incredible goal from Brahim Diaz.

Rodrygo gave Real Madrid the lead in the fourth minute at the Bernabeu Stadium, but Julian Alvarez gave Atletico a dramatic equaliser in the thirty-second minute. Diego Simeone's Atletico, who lost to their fierce rivals in the 2014 and 2016 championships, managed to silence players Vinicius Junior and Kylian Mbappe, but they were still defeated. The Rojiblancos appeared to accept their one-goal deficit for the second-leg derby match at home the following week by playing it conservatively in the closing minutes. After Fede Valverde was cleared to play, Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti chose him at right back and substituted Morocco international Diaz in midfield for Jude Bellingham, who was banned.
