Real Madrid’s chase for the title went in vain as they finish second

Real Madrid ended the La Liga season second after almost having the title within their grasp, even a 2-1 win against Villarreal at home on Saturday did not help their chances of finishing first. Atletico Madrid beat Valladolid 2-1 to claim their first title after 2014 and remained two points behind the champions with 84 points. Luka Modric and Casemiro kept missing their chances even when Villarreal was leading by one goal.

10 minutes after the second half Karim Benzema had almost leveled the score but his header was ruled out for offside by VAR. Benzema then avenged his missed goal but putting one in the top corner from the edge of the box. Luka Modric then scored a winner in the injury time and turned the game around. Villarreal even with the defeat ended seventh in the season.
