Relegation’ issues, Wolfsburg sack coach

Wolfsburg have sacked head coach Daniel Bauer as the club sinks deeper into relegation danger, announcing the decision on Sunday after a 2–1 home loss to Hamburg. The defeat left the 2009 Bundesliga champions second from bottom and facing the prospect of dropping out of the top flight for the first time since their 1997 promotion.

Bauer, appointed on an interim basis in November following Paul Simonis’ dismissal, initially steadied the side with three wins in seven matches. However, his team collected only two points from the last eight games, prompting the club to act. German media report that former Wolfsburg manager Dieter Hecking—who guided the team to a German Cup triumph and a league runners‑up finish in 2015—is expected to return in an effort to avoid the drop.

Wolfsburg now sit two points behind Werder Bremen, who currently occupy the relegation play‑off position, with the pressure mounting.
