Spain brush past Italy 

After defeating team Italy 1-0 on Thursday, Spain advanced to the round of 16 of the 2024 European Championship with one game remaining. Their commanding performance guaranteed that La Roja would advance as the winners of Group B. In the largest game of the tournament thus far in Germany, Riccardo Calafiori's own goal nine minutes after halftime separated the two teams.

However, unlike their resounding first-round thrashing of Croatia, Spain's narrow win margin in Gelsenkirchen did not represent a statement performance in which they utterly neutralized Italy and should have won the match before halftime. The standout performer for Spain was Nico Williams, who outran Giovanni Di Lorenzo, the right-back for Napoli, and provided the pass that resulted in the unlucky Calafiori poking the winning goal into his own net.
