A pitched battle left at least 174 dead and 180 injured after a soccer game in Indonesia, according to the latest report by Indonesian governor Emil Dardak. Most of the deaths occurred during the stampede, with dozens of people dying from being crushed or suffocated.
According to the newspaper El País, Arema FC fans jumped onto the pitch after their team lost to Persebaya Surayaba in Malang district. After this, authorities present at Kanjuruhan Stadium in East Java tried to calm the crowd with tear gas, however, without success.
The images of the invasion of the field were captured by several fans who were present in the stands, who went around the world on social media, showing fans jumping onto the field and starting a battle with the security of the venue, while players, referees and technical staff tried to flee.
