Prior to a late home goal to earn a victory and spark wild celebrations in Vallecas, rock-bottom Elche was poised to cling on for a spirited draw in the Spanish capital. Before Lucas Boye appeared to put Elche on top of the game, Rayo appeared to carry the early offensive danger. However, the home team quickly responded, as Sergio Camello's deflected shot pulled them even before halftime.
After the break, Elche tried to hold on, but Rayo pushed forward in the closing 20 minutes when Unai Lopez pounced on a stray ball on the edge of the box to score the game-winning goal. After the Elche defence failed to clear a cross into the area, Lopez scored the game-winning goal in the sixth minute of stoppage time with a low volley from outside the box.
