Villarreal dragged Copa winners Bilbao back to earth

Villarreal ruined Athletic Bilbao's Copa del Rey victory party, after striking deep into stoppage time to secure a 1-1 draw in the Spanish league. Athletic won their first Copa in four decades last weekend, defeating Mallorca, and the club paraded the trophy in front of its fans before Sunday's encounter at San Mames Stadium.

The celebration was going well until VAR saw a handball inside the area five minutes into stoppage time, and Villarreal playmaker Dani Parejo scored from the spot to secure the draw. Oihan Sancet put Athletic ahead in the 66th minute, around 20 minutes after Villarreal lost a player when Santiago Comesana was sent off. The draw hampers Athletic's prospects of competing for Spain's last Champions League position, putting them four points behind fourth-placed Atletico Madrid with seven games remaining.
