With Mbappe's double against Villarreal, Real Madrid claims the top spot

Real Madrid rallied to defeat Villarreal 2-1 and take the lead in the La Liga standings with two goals from Kylian Mbappe. When Aurelien Tchouameni deflected Alex Baena's corner in the seventh minute on Saturday, Juan Foyth scored from close range to give the home team the lead.

When Mbappe jumped on Brahim Diaz's blocked shot ten minutes later, the ball dropped at his feet for a close-range goal, cutting Real Madrid even. The French international scored his 20th league goal of the season six minutes later, after grabbing Lucas Vazquez's through pass and sliding it in. When Mbappe caught a through pass from Vinicius Jr. in the second half, he had a chance to complete his hat-trick, but the offside flag was raised. Real Madrid leads the standings with 60 points, three points ahead of second-place Barcelona, who will play third-place Atletico on Sunday.
