World Cup journey of Portugal was capped off by the firing of their head coach

After Portugal's 1-0 loss to Morocco in the World Cup quarterfinals on Saturday—the second straight game Cristiano Ronaldo did not start—Fernando Santos announced his resignation on Thursday. After the 2014 World Cup, Portugal fired Paulo Bento as their coach, and Santos, 68, was hired in his place. Greece was coached by Santos from 2010 to 2014.

Santos guided Portugal to its first significant international victory in 2016, the UEFA European Championship crown. After that, Uruguay eliminated Portugal from the 2018 World Cup in the Round of 16. Ronaldo's controversial interview with Piers Morgan, in which he attacked his club Manchester United, aired shortly before he left for Qatar, casting a shadow over Portugal's 2022 World Cup campaign. Santos removed Ronaldo, 37, from the starting lineup for Portugal's Round of 16 showdowns against Switzerland after being dissatisfied with the superstar's response to being substituted in the team's last group stage.
