Chelsea defeated Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 at Stamford Bridge to maintain their aspirations of playing in Europe while severely hurting their opponents' chances of making it into the Champions League the following year. Halfway through the first half, Trevoh Chalobah scored the opening goal of the game as he rose to meet a Conor Gallagher free-kick with a powerful header.

The goal was awarded despite a protracted video assistant referee assessment that looked for a potential block on Brennan Johnson by Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella during the build-up. Cristian Romero had Spurs' finest chance when he headed wide inside the six-yard box during the first half, but Spurs could not generate many more opportunities. However, Cole Palmer's free kick from the edge of the box struck the bar, and Nicolas Jackson headed the rebound into an empty net to give Chelsea the lead in the 71st minute.
