Brazil’s Cunha aces marathon swimming gold

Ana Marcela Cunha of Brazil establishes the title again winning gold in the women’s 10-kilometer Olympic marathon swimming event in Tokyo on Wednesday. The five-time marathon swimming world champion pushed past Sharon Van Rouwendaal of Netherlands and Australia’s Karenna Lee to touch the finish line in 1:59:30.8.

The chase was intense as the Dutch defending champion Sharon finished only nine-tenths of a second behind Cunha clocking 1:59.31.7 while Karenna followed with 1:59.32.5. Cunha and American Ashley Twichell took the lead in the first five laps beating American Haley Anderson who dropped fourth to finally finish sixth ahead of Ashley. Leonie Beck of Germany and British Alice Dearing were among others who failed to maintain their lead and finished outside the podium. Winning her first medal over three Olympic Games, the Brazilian was on cloud nine signaling No. 1 after getting out of the water at the Odaiba Marine Park course in Tokyo Bay.
