Florian Wellbrock wins the men's 10km marathon swim

Germany’s star swimmer delivered gold for the country winning the men’s marathon swimming in Day 13. Florian Wellbrock becomes the first male marathon swimmer to win an Olympic medal as world champion with this victory. The reigning champion finishes first in the race timing 1:48:33.7 entering history as the second athlete to win a medal in swimming and marathon swimming at a single Olympic Games.

Following the bronze medal in the men’s 1500m freestyle on Sunday, the 23-year-old joins Tunisian Oussama Mellouli along with Italy’s Gregorio Paltrinieri in the double event win. Mellouli won bronze in the 1500m and gold in the 10km in 2012. Hungary's Kristof Rasovszky claimed silver clocking 1:48:59.0 following Wellbrock, while Paltrinieri took bronze with 1:49:01.1 who finished second in the 800m freestyle earlier this week. Mellouli also takes bronze in the 1500m following gold in the 10km in 2012.
