Wang Zhouyu takes home China’s sixth weightlifting gold

Adding another gold to China’s commanding medal tally at Tokyo Olympics, Wang Zhouyu wins the title in the 87-kilogram weightlifting category. Lifting 120Kgs in the snatch round and later added 150Kgs more in the clean and jerk round to put a total of 270Kgs on the scoreboard. Ecuador’s Tamara Salazar in her bid to beat Zhouyu could only lift a total of 263Kg and settled with a silver.

Even a second-place finish is a huge achievement for Ecuador as Salazar becomes the second-ever female medalist from the country after her compatriot Neisi Dajomes won the gold in the 76Kg category yesterday to write her name down in history as the first female medalist of Ecuador. Dominican Republic’s Crismery Santana won the bronze medal to complete the podium with 256Kg. Wang was the world champion in this division in 2019 and topped that off with an Olympic Gold medal.
