Weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz wins Philippines’ first gold

The Philippines has been competing in the Summer Olympics since 1924 itself and with the exception of the Moscow Games in 1980, they have in that time won just three Silvers and 7 Bronze medals and now they add one gold to their tally after all with Hidilyn Diaz’s first-place finish in the women’s 55-kilogram category, she held off China’s Liao Qiuyun and denied her gold with her last lift in the clean and jerk round with a total of 224Kg just one Kg more that Liao.

Diaz holds a silver medal from Rio 2016 but Gold is a nice addition to her accolades now. In 2016, with the silver country got their first Olympic Podium after a wait of 20 years and now they top that off with silver. China was hoping for a sweep after winning three of the weightlifting competition. Kazakhstan’s Zulfiya Chinshanlo won the bronze with a lift of 213kg.
