The 6'4" wing just finished a three-year stint with the Detroit Pistons where he was a reliable shooting threat off the bench. McGruder previously participated in the 2014 Summer League with the Warriors after going undrafted in 2013 and 2013. In 2021, McGruder got into a fight with Golden players at the end of a game at a Chase Centre with no spectators. Warriors sharpshooter Klay Thompson attacked McGruder during a special commentary segment while he was recovering from a ruptured achilles, saying, "This dude might be out of the league soon, he's probably mad about that."
Even though he only played a little amount of minutes, McGruder has been a sharpshooter in recent seasons. He averaged three tries from deep per game last season and shot 42.3%, 39.7% on 2.9 attempts in 2021–2022 and 45.8% on 1.5 attempts in 2020–2021 respectively.
