On Saturday, the Kings made official the signing of veteran centre JaVale McGee. Five players will be battling for two backup places behind All-Star centre Domantas Sabonis when training camp opens on October 3. The specifics of the agreement were kept confidential in accordance with company rules, but according to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, the Kings handed McGee a veteran minimum contract with a one-year guarantee. For a player with 10 or more years of NBA experience, the minimum deal is close to $3.2 million. Only around $2 million of the team's salary limit is used under the minimum salary exemption.
McGee's status on the roster is not secured by the guaranteed deal, but it may give him an advantage. Six centres are under contract with the Kings: Skal Labissiere, Sabonis, McGee, Alex Len, Nerlens Noel, and Neemias Queta. Only Sabonis, Len, and McGee have contracts that are guaranteed.
