Miami’s disappointing opening to the 2026/27 NBA season has put Klay Thompson under immediate scrutiny. Signed after leaving Dallas, the four-time champion was expected to add experience, shooting and leadership, but his early performances have fallen short.
Thompson is shooting just 34.5% from the field and 34.6% from three-point range through three games, following an even tougher preseason. His defensive impact has also become a major concern as Miami struggles to establish consistency.
The Heat had expected their starting lineup, featuring Giannis Antetokounmpo, Bam Adebayo, Andrew Wiggins and Davion Mitchell, to become a defensive strength. Instead, the team has struggled at both ends.
If Erik Spoelstra decides to make changes, Thompson appears the most vulnerable starter. Pelle Larsson and Tim Hardaway Jr. could provide alternatives, while Simone Fontecchio has recorded the best defensive rating among the potential replacements.
With Miami searching for answers, Thompson may have little time to reverse the trend.
