The New Orleans Pelicans have reinforced their young core by exercising rookie contract options for Jeremiah Fears, Yves Missi and Derik Queen, securing their services for the 2027/28 NBA season.
Missi’s fourth-year option has been activated, while Fears and Queen will continue under their respective third-year options. Their projected salaries are $5.6 million for Missi, $8.3 million for Fears and $5.7 million for Queen.
A.J. Johnson, however, faces a different scenario. New Orleans declined his fourth-year option, reportedly worth approximately $5.5 million.
Should the decision stand, Johnson will become an unrestricted free agent after the 2026/27 campaign, free to negotiate with any NBA franchise. The move could also restrict the Pelicans’ flexibility when negotiating a new contract.
While three young players have received clear backing, Johnson’s long-term future in New Orleans remains uncertain as the franchise evaluates its roster and priorities for the seasons ahead.
