San Antonio Spurs are waiving veteran point guard Cameron Payne

Payne was acquired by the Spurs in a July trade with the Phoenix Suns. San Antonio, though, never really had a desire to retain the 29-year-old player around since they have so many other young guards that require playing time. Payne is predicted to avoid waivers and draw interest from many playoff teams in need of a good backup point guard. The Milwaukee Bucks, Boston Celtics, and Miami Heat are on his list of prospective suitors.

With the Suns over the previous four seasons, Cameron Payne developed into a useful role player. He averaged 10.3 points and 4.5 assists while playing 48 games in 2022–23 while dealing with ailments. He also performed admirably throughout the postseason, scoring 31 points in Game 6 of the Western Conference semifinals against the Denver Nuggets. Payne has also previously suited up for the Cleveland Cavaliers, Chicago Bulls, and Oklahoma City Thunder.
